Vadim Syssoev was born in 1966 in Skopin, a small town in the Ryazan' region of Russia. He realized his artistic calling early in life, and entered an arts magnet school in Skopin in 1978, graduating in 1983. From 1985 to 1987 he served in the Soviet Army.

Upon discharge, in 1987, Syssoev enrolled at the Leningrad Serov Art College (now St. Petersburg Rerikh Art College). He participated in several exhibitions in Russia and abroad during the years of his study, notably the German-Soviet Simposium on Art in Radolfzell, Germany, in 1989. In 1991 he graduated from the RerikhArt College, and has been supporting himself as an artist since.

For many years, Syssoev
used the name of his native town as his artistic pseudonym for many years, signing his works "Vadim de Skopin". This choice is an ironic nod to the masters of the past, who were often known by the cities of their birth or residence. Vadim Syssoev's art presents a great variety of styles, from studies of Renaissance or Rococo works to cubist compositions. Gustav Klimt and Paul Cezanne can be named as some of the traceable influences. Like Klimt, Vadim Syssoev often creates the frames for his paintings himself, to assure that his vision is fully and harmoniously realized.
