Aleksandr Gerasimov was born 1 July 1955 in Riga, the capital of Latvia, in a Russian military family. He read extensively throughout his childhood and adolescence. Gerasimov's love of literature and art led him to study at the Belorussian State Theater Institute in Minsk. His art still has many traces of theater, in his focus on people, their joys, travails, and relationships.
Gerasimov has been living in St. Petersburg, Russia, since 1978. This majestic city has long been the center of the arts in Russia, its museums a great repository of treasures. The exalted classical lines of urban St. Petersburg have been an inspiration to generations of Russian artists. Gerasimov, in his unique style, fuses the imagery of the Byzantine Icon tradition with the techniques of representation developed by modern art, tracing a surprising continuum. Many of his canvases, although two-dimensional, incorporate relief features that create fascinating textures and depth. His images possess a strong emotional charge, whether shrill and disturbing, or peaceful and mysterious.
Gerasimov's style has been polished by many years of work. He has participated in the exhibitions of the Association of Experimental Art since 1985, and numerous other shows in Russia and abroad. His works have travelled to private collections in Russia, the United States, Germany, Netherlands, France, and Great Britain.
