Mikhail Kondratiev was born in 1957 in Berlin, Germany. His father was an academician and a diplomat, his mother a teacher. Mikhail had always been interested in art and literature, but he chose to study engineering when he went to college in the ancient Russian town of Tula, south of Moscow.
In 1979, at the age of 22, Kondratiev moved to St. Petersburg and started studying art on his own. Using the wonderful museums of St. Petersburg and their libraries as his classrooms, he delved into the theory of art, history of culture, anatomy, and drawing.
Since 1988 Mikhail Kondratiev has supported himself as an artist. He has been represented by various galleries in St. Petersburg, such as "Borei", "Naslediye (Heritage)", "SPAS (St. Petersburg Art Salon)", "Garmonia (Harmony)". Kondratiev is not a member of any of the artists' unions; he works on his own, developing different aspects of his creativity. He has gone to Paris in 1994 to study the beautiful collections of the Louvre and Mussee de Orsay. His works have been purchased by private collectors from Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, Korea, Egypt, etc. Kondratiev's style is refined and precise. He possesses a sense of color and drama that infuses his landscapes with motion and life.
Mikhail Kondratiev is married and has a daughter.
