Sonya Nikolsky was born in Moscow in 1964. She left Russia at 15 and came to the United States with her mother. Sonya graduated from the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, and later entered the New York Fashion Institute of Technology to study Graphic Design.
Sonya worked as a graphic designer and artist for several years in New York City, before moving to Durham in 1994. Life in Durham has allowed the artist more time and opportunity for creative work. Sonya has had her work exhibited at the Culturas Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Art-O-Matic gallery and Duke Hospital in Durham.
Sonya Nikolsky works in various media, preferring acrylic and etching. Her subjects range from impressionistic landscapes to somber portraits of mysterious creatures. Sonya's work is introspective, often ironic, her style is characterized by well-defined fields of rich color contrasting and complementing each other.
