Masterpiece Art was founded by Terry Sanford, President Emeritus of Duke University, Governor of and U. S. Senator from North Carolina, founder of the internationally acclaimed North Carolina School for the Arts, and Chairman of the Board of the North Carolina Museum of Art. He actively supported the gallery until his death in 1998.

Masterpiece Art was organized is 1995 at a time when the arts in Russia were in dire need of support. The company started by exporting original oil paintings and replications to the United States.

Eventually, the network of artists represented by Masterpiece Art grew. New types of art and other media were added to the offerings.

Masterpiece Art conducted a debut exhibition at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, in April of 1996. It was followed in May of 1996 by a three-day invitation-only show at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

In January of 1997 Masterpiece Art opened a permanent gallery in Durham, North Carolina. At present, Masterpiece Art represents over 30 Russian artists. Most of them live in St. Petersburg, a city long known as the center for fine arts in Russia. Through the Sister Cities program, Masterpiece Art has received works by artists from Kostroma, Durham's Russian Sister City.
