Sergei Volkov was born in Kargopol, a city in the Archangel region in the north of Russia, in 1959. After completing high school he was drafted into the army and served the mandatory two years. In the army, his artistic talent got him the job of decorating the regiment museum.
Shortly after being discharged from the army, Volkov moved to St. Petersburg. His first job there was as an art restorer in the Pushkino Palace of Catherine the Great. After one year of work on this project, Volkov contracted a different restoration company for four years. His talent continually attracted the attention of his employers, and finally in 1985 he entered the Serov Art College as a student. In 1989 he graduated with honors in the field of oil and icon restoration.
Since 1989 Volkov has supported himself by painting original art that can now be seen in private collections in Russia as well as abroad. In 1994 he was recommended to Masterpiece Art and in 1996 introduced to the American public. Volkov usually signs his work "Afrikanych", which is his second name (patronym, a name derived from his father's name).
Volkov admires the work of the early Flemish masters and Silvestr Schedrin, a Russian artist of the nineteenth century. As a restorer, Volkov has had a chance to study the style of various artists in depth, which makes him an experienced copyist. However, his greatest pleasure is creating original work. His preferred style is realism, but he continually explores different styles and media. Volkov is an outstanding portrait artist, attentive to his subjects and thorough in his work.
